Assessing Tobacco Control Compliance: RAID Gambia Conducts Baseline Survey (2012)

RAID - The Gambia conducted a baseline survey report on the tobacco situation, funded by the American Cancer Society. The survey aimed not only to understand the tobacco landscape but also to assess the implementation of Article 5.3 of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. This article focuses on the protection of public health policies concerning tobacco control from commercial and other vested interests of the tobacco industry. Moreover, RAID - The Gambia's initiative delved into the implementation of Article 11, which addresses packaging and labeling of tobacco products. Article 11 mandates effective measures to ensure that tobacco packaging and labeling do not promote tobacco products in a false, misleading, or deceptive manner. It also requires tobacco packaging to carry health warnings describing the harmful effects of tobacco use. Furthermore, the survey extended its scope to Article 13, which stipulates that parties should prohibit all promotion of tobacco products using means that are false, misleading, deceptive, or likely to create an erroneous impression. Additionally, it mandates the inclusion of health or other appropriate warnings or messages on tobacco products. Article 13 also requires regular disclosure by the tobacco industry to authorities regarding any advertising, promotion, and sponsorship activities in which it engages. This crucial undertaking was funded by the Framework Convention Alliance. Through these comprehensive efforts, RAID - The Gambia contributed significantly to understanding the tobacco landscape and implementing crucial measures aimed at tobacco control in the region.
