RAID - The Gambia emerged as a pioneering force in advocating for tobacco tax increment and the allocation of 3% of tax collection on tobacco to the Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) unit at the Ministry of Health, specifically designated for tobacco control activities. Recognizing the dual benefits of tobacco taxation as both a revenue generation mechanism and a deterrent to tobacco consumption, RAID embarked on a strategic advocacy campaign aimed at mobilizing support for increased tobacco taxes and targeted funding for tobacco control efforts. Through collaborative efforts with policymakers, health officials, civil society organizations, and advocacy partners, RAID effectively communicated the compelling rationale behind tobacco tax increment. By emphasizing the economic benefits of higher tobacco taxes, including increased government revenue and reduced healthcare costs associated with tobacco-related illnesses, RAID garnered widespread support for policy reforms aimed at curbing tobacco use. Furthermore, RAID advocated for the earmarking of a portion of tobacco tax revenue to support tobacco control activities conducted by the NCDs unit at the Ministry of Health. This targeted funding allocation aimed to strengthen the capacity of the NCDs unit to implement evidence-based interventions, conduct public awareness campaigns, and enforce tobacco control regulations effectively. RAID's advocacy efforts in 2013 underscored its commitment to advancing tobacco control objectives and promoting public health initiatives in The Gambia. By advocating for tobacco tax increment and targeted funding allocation, RAID demonstrated its proactive stance in addressing the tobacco epidemic and its dedication to reducing tobacco-related morbidity and mortality in the country. The successful outcome of RAID's advocacy efforts paved the way for policy reforms that prioritize tobacco control as a public health priority and allocate resources to support comprehensive tobacco control programs. Moving forward, RAID continues to champion evidence-based strategies and collaborative initiatives aimed at creating a tobacco-free future for all Gambians.
